The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden has an extensive collection of plants dated from the French era. It was created in 1770 by the botanist Pierre Poivre who acquired the estate, formerly the old property of the then Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais.
Initiative of Pierre Poivre has inspired great men of every age through our history, and the avenues of the park tell stories related to their footprint in the erection of the botanical garden.
The site and its vicinity is living cultural and historical heritage; it also depicted our initial impulse of our agricultural holding.
Renamed umpteen times, the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is home to more than 600 species of plants, among which, aquatic plants, collection of cosmopolitan palm trees and valuable timber trees. The ones that spark much curiosity are the Talipot palm from Ceylan, the Giant water lily from the West Indies and indigenous trees of the Mascarenes.
This enormous collection of rarest plants from around the world, as well as the species indigenous to Mauritius, is bound to impress even those who know plenty about botany.
You may come across during your visit with Java deer, giant tortoise of Aladabra and by the water ponds you may observe, species as, Tilapia, carp, heron and water hen in their natural habitat.
