The currency of Mauritius Island is Mauritius rupee (MRU)

One Mauritius rupee can technically be divided into 100 cents. It was founded in 1876 as the local currency of Mauritius. It was chosen because of massive use of Indian rupees after huge Indian migration to Mauritius.

Prices and payments here are only in Mauritius money. You can purchase currency of Mauritius in the most banks and hotels. Banks are open Monday through Friday 10.00-14.00 and Saturday 9.00-11.30.

 

Prices in Mauritius

Mauritius is the one of the cheapest places in the region. It remains a place cheap enough for travelers although Mauritius authorities wish to make island available only for rich and wealthy tourists but it is still open for travelers with average earnings.

Travelers can reduce their costs to a minimum, if they stay in hotels and boarding houses with self-services. If you live in a hotel or guest house for more than five days you can get a discount of 25%.

There is no charge for service in cheap hotels, but larger Mauritius hotels and restaurants add to bill 15% because of the governmental tax. There is tipping in the restaurants and you can also give some money to porters at the airport. Trading is a part of Mauritius life so you can make it easily and safely.

 

Shopping

Shops are generally open 9:00-17:00 (Port Louis) or 10:00-18:00 (in other cities) on weekdays, and on Saturdays - 12:00-17:00 in the capital, in other cities, they usually work longer. Once a week (usually on Thursday afternoons) stores are closed for «cleaning day».

A good souvenir from Mauritius will be jewelry with precious stones, whose prices are lower on average 40% than in Europe.
